Breaking Ground…

BREAKING GROUND

A SHOWCASE OF ARTWORKS INSPIRED BY THE EXPERIENCE
OF HAVING A FAMILY MEMBER IN PRISON

21ST JANUARY 2017 12-5PM

@ MANY STUDIOS 3 ROSS STREET, THE BARRAS, GLASGOW, G1 5AR

FREE

Breaking Ground is a showcase of new artworks by KIN, an arts collective inspired by their experience of having a family member in prison. This event will showcase the first three artworks of KIN and give you an opportunity to contribute to the conversation. KIN is a call that demands a response.
First Words is a film created by the group that will be screened throughout the day with a question and answer session.

The Golden Thread is a roaming audio performance where the audience chooses their own journey.

The Thing a new zine filled with visual art, photography and writing from the KIN collective.

There will be opportunities for you to create art in response to what you see, hear and feel on the day. KIN is a conversation, and you are invited to take part.

KIN was established in late 2015, bringing together a group with lived experience of familial imprisonment. The collective create art together as a way of making sense of their experience and creating new ways to talk about the issue.

When a young person is disconnected from both their family and society, there is a responsibility to address our own roles in this isolation; the art of KIN aims to draw us in to the experience, and send us out to make a difference. The collective create art together as a way of making sense of their experience and creating new ways to talk about the issue.

Film on Fire

January 16, 2017 By Jim Leave a Comment

Hi Everyone,

I’m writing to invite you to media co-op’s  ‘Film on Fire’ on Thursday 26 January 4pm to 5.30pm at Glasgow Women’s Library.

This free event is part of the Scottish Government’s Fire Starter Festival: “a week-long festival of collaborative learning events…lighting fires by exploring genuine, participatory methods of engagement.” Full listings here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/o/fire-starter-festival-2017-11179733133

We’ll explore participatory film as an effective way to get people’s voices heard, and show some of media co-op’s short films made by people at the sharp end of social inequality.

Here’s the link to book your free ticket, and to find out more details about the event.

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/film-on-fire-glasgow-tickets-30077678145.

I’d love to see you there.

Please feel free to share with any colleagues, friends or networks who’d like to learn more about service-users creating their own high-quality film in co-production. All welcome.

We’d be delighted if you could share the links on social media too.

By the way if you know folk in Edinburgh who’d be interested, media co-op is also hosting an Edinburgh Fire Starter on Mon 30 Jan, 2pm to 3.30pm at Mansfield Traquair Centre. Here’s the link for free tickets https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/film-on-fire-edinburgh-tickets-30351846189.

Best wishes,

Lucinda

People with Convictions…

November 25, 2016 By Jim Leave a Comment

The BBC has reported that “Scottish government renames ‘offender’ as ‘person with conviction’.” This was as a result of the work undertaken by our good selves at the behest of the Scottish Government. The labelling of people with convictions as an offender or ex-offender is a pejorative statement that can keep someone in the revolving door of criminality. By losing the label, we can give people hope that there is a different way forward for them to contribute to society…

The change is not a new thing though. It was first introduced by Paul Wheelhouse MSP who was the then community safety Minister when he was speaking at an employability conference in Edinburgh. Throughout his speech Mr Wheelhouse referred to people with convictions…

There is still much work to be done to remove other labels and this is something we shall continue to strive for…

BBC Story (well they did link to our website…)

The story was also discussed on the Stephen Jardine show on Radio Scotland…
